Dr. Markus Klein (M.K.), Senior Manager Lighting at Visteon Germany, talks to Joanna Scheffel (J.S.) at IQPC about recent developments and challenges of lighting in the automotive industry, such as LED technology.

J.S.: In a growing and developing market like the automotive industry, how is your company setting itself apart?

M.K.: Visteon Lighting strives to make new technologies affordable for a larger market.

J.S.: What major challenges is the industry facing at the moment?

M.K.: Identifying new styling signatures with affordable LED technologies for all lighting functions.

J.S.: What needs to be done to reduce the cost of LED technology?

M.K.: LED prices have been dropping significantly during the past 10 years. New suppliers and new technologies are creating a strong competitive environment. Cost Reductions of LED technologies are possible today, but require a strong interaction with vehicle stylists to minimize the ‘appearance cost’. Also LED low and high beam functions can compete with Xenon lamps today, if it is possible to compromise on performance.
